With Vishwanath & Sons crossing Rs 200 crore at the worldwide box office in just ten days, director Venky Atluri has opened up about the extensive effort that went into crafting the script and the key creative decision that changed the film's climax.

Speaking in a recent interview, Atluri revealed that certain scenes were rewritten 11 to 12 times, with every scene averaging six to seven drafts. The original climax was a conventional happy ending — the hero and heroine hugging, kissing and living happily ever after. However, Suriya pushed back. "He told me, 'You are coming from Lucky Baskhar and I am coming from Karuppu which is an out-and-out commercial film — so when we are coming with a family film, there should be something different,'" Atluri recalled.

The result is the film's now much-discussed open ending, where Sanjay admits his feelings to Anjali rather than Maddy, and the film closes with the two staring into the sunset as Abhay holds their hands — leaving the interpretation to the audience.

Vishwanath & Sons is Suriya's second consecutive blockbuster after Karuppu. He next awaits the release of Suriya 47, directed by Jithu Madhavan, expected later this year.
