What is Hollywood Walk of Fame?
The 'Hollywood Walk of Fame' is a famous landmark cum tourist attraction in USA, where coveted stars displaying names of celebrities are embedded in the sidewalks. Since the 1960s, the 'Hollywood Walk of Fame' stars have symbolized achievements in the American entertainment industry, and these monuments bear the names of actors, producers, directors (represented by a classic camera for movies and vintage television for the small screen), musicians (represented by a vinyl record), theatrical/musical groups (represented by comedy/tragedy masks), radio personalities (represented by a broadcast mic) and even fictional characters.
More recently, the 'Hollywood Walk of Fame' has expanded into sports, and athletes in USA have started receiving their stars represented by a winning cup on them. As of 2025, the 'Walk of Fame' consists of 2,813 stars.
Indian Actors with Walk of Fame Stars
It was a moment of pride for India when Deepika Padukone was announced as one of the famed individuals selected to receive her Walk of Fame star in the class of 2026, having marked her presence with the Vin Diesel lead XXX: The Return of Xander Cage in 2017 (the promotions of which left Hollywood swooning for Padukone), and presenting at the Oscars 2023 (The Office fame Mindly Kaling famously commented this year on Deepika’s Instagram recollecting the time and wrote, “When I met you at the Oscars I almost couldn’t breathe! You’re amazing!”).
Deepika Padukone was also a jury member at the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, which further proves her impact in the international film circuits. While Padukone is the second actor of Indian origin to be selected to embedded in the Walk of Fame, the first Indian actor to receive this prestigious star was Sabu Dastagir.
Born Selar Sabu, Sabu Dastagir was just 14 when he made his acting debut with the British adventure film Elephant Boy (1937). Sabu was a Mysore resident at the time of his debut, being born to an Assamese mother, and a Deccani father who was an elephant mahout.
6 international movies later, Sabu had become an US citizen, and went on to have a noteworthy Hollywood career until his passing in 1963. Three years before his passing, Sabu was historically inducted in the Hollywood Walk of Fame aged 36, and had become the first actor of Indian origin to receive his star.
For 66 years since 1960, Dastagir remained the only Indian actor with the Hollywood walk of fame star.
