Tamil cinema is gearing up for the release of two new movies titled Chennai City Gangsters and Kuberaa on June 20, 2025, and here is what you need to know about the films that will be clashing at the box-office next Friday. 

1. Chennai City Gangsters

12 years ago, music composer Anirudh Ravichander teamed up with lyricist Hiphop Tamizha to give the Tamil audience a bop titled 'Chennai City Gangsta'. While that song from the film Vanakkam Chennai (2013) sang praises of the Chennai city in comparison to Mumbai, Chennai City Gangsters on the other hand is a comedy heist movie that revolves around Pandi (Vaibhav) and Poochi (Manikandan Rajesh), who having lost a big amount of money given for safekeeping, are introduced to four eccentric ex-conmen—Split Soosai (Anandraj), Memory Dass (Motta Rajendran), Damar Lal (John Vijay), and Kudi Kumar (Sunil Reddy). 

How this crazy bunch plans a bank robbery to repay Paandi and Poochi's loss, is what forms the rest of the film. Chennai City Gangsters is written by debutant Vikram Rajeshwar, who has also directed the film alonside another debutant Arun Keshav. Athulya Ravi plays female lead in this movie, that also stars Redin Kingsley, Bala Saravanan, Ilavarasu, Livingston, KPY Bala, Diksha Panth, among others. 

Late Shihan Hussaini plays the main antagonist in Chennai City Gangsters, marking his last appearance in a movie, that is releasing posthumously. Chennai City Gangsters has D Imman for music,  Tijo Tomy for cinematography, Suresh A Prasad for edits, Arun Shankar Durai for art, and  Don Ashok for stunts. 

The movie is a production venture of BTG Universal, and its overseas distribution rights is with Tentkotta. Chennai City Gangsters has so far had three single releases titled Meyya Mummari, My Maima (Promo Song), and O Meri Jaan. Fourth single Chillu Chillu is gearing up for a release at 5 PM with a music video. 

2. Kuberaa (U/A)

Initially titled Kubera after the 1999 Kannada movie, this Dhanush-lead multi-starrer movie is now titled Kuberaa, and is releasing in theaters on June 20, 2025. Interestingly, Kuberaa also shares similarities with the Kannada film beyond just the title. 

The Kannada movie Kubera starring Jaggesh and female lead Ravali, is a situational comedy-drama that revolves around a middle-class consultant named Kubera, who is hired by wealthy clients to resolve their personal, and financial problems. How Kubera manages solutions using a mix of humorous schemes, moral lessons, and lighthearted trickery, for both his rich clients, and himself is what the Kannada film is about. 

On the other hand, the Telugu-Tamil multilingual Kuberaa is a socio-drama-thriller where Dhanush plays a beggar, who is employed by a middle class chartered accountant Nagarjuna to launder black money from rich corrupt business tycoons. While 'beggar' Dhanush aides in the scam, he also turns out to be a cunning impostor, launching his own game of betrayal and survival.

Kuberaa is written and directed by Sekhar Kammula, marking the Telugu filmmaker's maiden collaboration with Tamil star Dhanush. Kuberaa has Rashmika Mandanna playing female lead, paired opposite Dhanush in the movie, and Jim Sarbh in an important role. 

Devi Sri Prasad has composed music for Kuberaa, and all four songs in the album have had individual releases in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. Kuberaa's current runtime stands at 181. 46 minutes, but film's producer Suneil Narang has said that it will be brought down to less than 3 hours before the movie hitting theater screens. 

Kuberaa's OTT rights are with Amazon Prime Video, who Suneil Narang has revealed were gung ho about not changing the June 20 release date. “I requested a July date, but they said they’d deduct Rs. 10 Cr. if we missed the June 20 release. It all goes according to their will now", stated Kuberaa's producer while revealing about the post-production delays that had occurred for the film. 

Kuberaa is currently gearing up for a trailer release on June 13, 2025 (tomorrow). The movie's teaser is out in all languages under the title 'Trance of Kuberaa'. The movie has been made on a budget of Rs. 120 Cr. (approximate) by Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP, and Amigos Creations Pvt Ltd.
