Veera Dheera Sooran (Part 2) Review - Packs a Punch!

Veera Dheera Sooran (Part 2) - Packs a Punch!
Bharath Vijayakumar
During the promotions of Veera Dheera Sooran, the team had mentioned that the story begins from the very first shot. And it does! An event sets the ball rolling, and the entire film actually happens over the course of one night (save the flashback). In a way, Veera Dheera Sooran is a far cry from the template Tamil action hero film. There is not a single scene that is dedicated to the hero outside the plot. Even the fan service moments are all important events in the plot of the film. The film is closer to something like a Kaithi. So, in another way, you can tell it does follow a standard template but something that is essentially used in foreign action films. But where Veera Dheera Sooran really stands out is that it feels like our very own masala film. Again, S.J. Suryah had said that if Martin Scorsese had directed a village film, it would be something like Veera Dheera Sooran. I am not sure of that but yes, it is a raw and focused action thriller that also imbibes the sensibilities of our very own masala films. This isn't a comparison, nor does the film borrow from these films, but what if the backstabs and betrayals of Vada Chennai are set in a one-night film like Kaithi and the hero is from a film like Dhool. Now don't get your expectations high but Veera Dheera Sooran is a film that tries to marry the essence of these three different kinds of films.

S.U.Arun Kumar doesn't establish his characters before putting them in a situation. The situation is established first and the characters are on the run. We actually get to know the characters and their motives, while on the run with them. The flashback that gives us a better idea of these characters is pretty crisp and is again based on a particular event. Even there, it is not like characters are being established from the scratch. If the current timeline is about what is happening on a fateful night, the flashback is kind of a trailer to what had happened on a fateful day. Maybe Part 1 is about exploring this world and who Dhilip actually is.

// Mild Spoiler ahead
S.U.Arun Kumar has also tried to play around a bit. We normally have the interval at a very high moment. Given that Veera Dheera Sooran itself is like one big extended climax showdown, the interval pops up at the oddest moment. And then there is a nice call back moment to one of Vikram's big hits. Given that we don't have surprises anymore with all the highlights of films being revealed in promotions, this one really worked as a theatrical moment. And while I am thinking if I need to mention this and reveal a spoiler, I am already seeing clips of the scene being shared around in social media.
Spoiler ends//

The film is pretty long but the tension is maintained right through. But also, towards the fag end, a kind of fatigue sets in when the action keeps going on for some time. You wonder whether you are just moving around in circles. It is the making and the performances that see through this period. The acting is solid all around. Looks like Vikram had a ball playing the unhinged action hero after a while.

There are enough instances to showcase his emotions as well.

While S.J.Suryah is type casted as a cop, he plays this one differently doing away with his usual flamboyance. Suraj is very good, though his role is kind of one note.

Bottomline

Veera Dheera Sooran (Part 2) is a focused action thriller that packs a punch. Maybe a bit overlong and could have done with some refinement but the tension is (mostly) intact!
