L2 Empuraan starring Mohanlal in the lead has been much in the news because of its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots, and right-wing politics of India. To the extent that L2: Empuraan's director, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, producer Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvaad Cinemas, and producer Gokulam Gopalan of Sree Gokulam Movies have been subject to IT (former) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids, and notices (latter two).
L2: Empuraan released in theaters on March 27, 2025, and by March 31, 2025, a three minute visual from the movie was edited out from exhibition, alongside 17 voluntary changes including edits to the Gijarat riot sequences, portrayal of violence against women (rape), the antagonist's name, as well as muting of some of the dialogues. By April 2, 2025, L2: Empuraan was recensored with 24 cuts amounting to 2 minutes and 8 seconds of runtime by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
This edited version of L2: Empuraan is now making its digital premiere on JioHotstar. L2: Empuraan's OTT release date is April 24, 2025, and the film will be available to stream in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada languages. It is worth mentioning here that internationally, no edits or cuts were made to the movie, hence the international version may differ from the domestic version on OTT too.
Also starring Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh among others, L2: Empuraan is a direct sequel to Lucifer (2019), the first movie of the 'L' franchise created by writer Murali Gopy and director Prithviraj Sukumaran. L2: Empuraan's sequel, and the last movie in the trilogy is titled L3: Azrael, which is yet to begin production.
